Frequently Asked Questions
What is psychotherapy?
Psychotherapy, also known as talk therapy or counseling, is a collaborative process between a trained therapist and a client to explore and address psychological difficulties, emotional challenges, and personal growth. It provides a safe and supportive environment for individuals to gain insights, develop coping strategies, and work towards positive change.
How can psychotherapy help me?
Psychotherapy can help you in various ways. It offers a non-judgmental space to explore and understand your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It can assist in managing and reducing symptoms of mental health conditions, improving relationships, enhancing self-esteem, developing effective coping skills, and promoting personal growth and self-awareness.
How long does psychotherapy usually last?
The duration of therapy varies depending on individual needs and goals. Some people may benefit from short-term therapy focused on specific issues, while others may engage in longer-term therapy for more complex concerns. Together with your therapist, you can determine the optimal duration and frequency of sessions based on your progress and evolving needs.
What can I expect in a typical session?
A typical therapy session involves open and honest conversations with your therapist in a confidential setting. Your therapist will actively listen, ask questions, and provide guidance and support. You'll work collaboratively to explore your thoughts, feelings, and experiences, gain insights, set goals, and develop strategies to address challenges and promote well-being.
How often should I attend therapy sessions?
The frequency of therapy sessions depends on your individual needs and preferences. Initially, weekly sessions are often recommended to establish a therapeutic relationship and make progress. As therapy progresses, sessions may be scheduled less frequently. Ultimately, the frequency of sessions will be determined collaboratively with your therapist based on your goals and progress.
How do I choose the right therapist for me?
Choosing the right therapist is crucial for a successful therapy experience. Consider factors such as the therapist's qualifications, specialization, experience, approach, and therapeutic style. It's important to find someone with whom you feel comfortable and supported. You can schedule initial consultations with different therapists to determine the best fit for your needs.
What is the difference between individual therapy and couples therapy?
Individual therapy focuses on working one-on-one with a therapist to address personal challenges and improve mental well-being. Couples therapy, on the other hand, involves both partners attending therapy sessions together to improve their relationship dynamics, enhance communication, resolve conflicts, and strengthen their bond.
Is psychotherapy covered by insurance?
Psychotherapy services are often eligible for insurance coverage; however, the extent of coverage may vary depending on your specific insurance provider and plan. It is advisable to directly contact your insurance company to obtain detailed information about your mental health coverage. This includes verifying the types of therapy and therapists covered, any specific limitations or requirements, as well as potential co-pays or deductibles. It's important to note that I am only an in-network provider for Anthem Blue Cross, Blue Shield of California and ComPsych and do not participate in other insurance panels. Nevertheless, I can provide you with a Superbill for the services rendered outside of Anthem Blue Cross, Blue Shield of California and ComPsych, which you can submit to your insurance for potential reimbursement. It's essential to be aware that reimbursement amounts differ based on your insurance provider, and specific outcomes cannot be guaranteed. Therefore, it is strongly recommended to communicate directly with your individual insurance provider for accurate and comprehensive information.
How much does therapy cost?
Individual Therapy sessions are offered at a rate of $190 per 45-50 minute session, providing you with a dedicated space for personal growth and healing. Associates in the practice are at a lower rate of $170 with limited sliding scale slots, private pay only. Couples therapy sessions, designed to enhance relationship dynamics, are available at a rate of $225 per 45-50 minute session. How do I know if I need therapy?
If you are experiencing emotional distress, struggling with daily functioning, or facing challenges that affect your well-being and quality of life, therapy may be beneficial. Common signs include persistent feelings of sadness or anxiety, difficulty coping with stress, relationship problems, significant life changes, trauma, or a desire for personal growth. A therapist can assess your situation and help determine if therapy is appropriate.

Confidentiality is a fundamental principle in therapy. Therapists are legally and ethically bound to maintain confidentiality, ensuring that your personal information and discussions remain private. However, there are exceptions, such as situations involving potential harm to yourself or others, child or elder abuse, or when required by law. Your therapist should explain their confidentiality policy and address any concerns you have.

There are various therapeutic approaches and modalities, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Psychodynamic Therapy, Humanistic Therapy, Mindfulness-Based Therapies, and Family Systems Therapy, among others. Each approach has its own theoretical basis and techniques. A therapist will tailor the treatment to your specific needs, drawing from the most appropriate approach or combining different modalities.
